To take a healthy break from all the post WWDC and iPhone 4 commotion, I thought I’d draw your attention to a rather fantastic game. A friend of mine a couple of weeks back mentioned a certain ‘Angry Birds’ to me, and said it was “brilliant”. So, I ignored him and politely nodded and added an appropriate “hmmmm”. Not a week later, another iPhone toting pal said “Have you got Angry Birds?” Suddenly I was interested. Maybe because a second person mentioned it, or maybe because this second guy wasn’t someone I’d normally associate with playing games on a mobile.
So, I paid my $0.99 and gave it a go. I now wish I hadn’t! I don’t think I’ve seen my wife for almost 4 days, it’s ridiculously addictive. I cannot put it down. I feel a little like when staring in to a cookie jar, and telling myself “just one more”, that one more level turns in to another hour, quite easily. Maybe I should have entered this post as a warning, I feel my daughter is getting neglected way too much while the game is on my phone.
The game is pretty simple to understand. You basically just catapult various breeds of birds in an attempt to kill off all of the green pigs that have stolen eggs from your nests. As you advance further you unlock different types of bird. Some blow things up, others boomerang around the back and so on. I’m not entirely sure why it’s so addictive, maybe it’s just that we all have an in-built love of destroying things. And with piles of wood, glass and stone to send your feathered friends in to, that satisfaction is readily met.
So, if you haven’t already download it (link launches iTunes), give the free version a go if you like, but it will get you hooked and almost force you to buy the full version and give up any hope of real life for a few days. (I’ve almost completed it already.) Like I mentioned earlier it’s 99 cents, and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, providing you have OS 3.0 or later.
